A Local Law in relation to workforce stabilization payments for school paraprofessionals, and providing for the repeal thereof
In committee as of May 14, 2026Under review by an assigned committee.
✦ Plain-Language Summary
This bill would give school paraprofessionals (teacher's aides and classroom assistants) in NYC public schools an extra $10,000 payment each August to help keep them in their jobs. The payment would be adjusted based on how many days they actually worked during the school year, and it wouldn't count toward their pension benefits. This extra money would stop once the paraprofessionals' union negotiates a new contract that increases their regular pay by at least the same amount.

Official Description
This bill would require the Department of Education to provide annual workforce stabilization payments to eligible school paraprofessionals on August 1 of each year. Each payment would be a non-pensionable, lump sum payment of $10,000, pro-rated by the number of school days on payroll in the relevant school year. The requirement would be repealed upon the execution of a collective bargaining agreement that provides for an increase in the total annual compensation for school paraprofessionals equal to or greater than the amount of the workforce stabilization payments.
